Republic of Senegal

Senegal is a country in West Africa. Its western coast lies on the Atlantic Ocean. It shares borders with The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali and Mauritania. The country covers 196,766 square kilometres and has 531 kilometres of coastline. Its population is estimated at 19,075,959 in 2025. Dakar is the capital; other major cities include Pikine, Touba and Thiès. French is the official language and the West African CFA franc is the currency.

Portuguese traders reached the region in the 15th century and became involved in the ivory and slave trades. Between the 17th and 19th centuries, the territory was colonised by France. Senegal gained independence in 1960. Its two major rivers are the Senegal and the Casamance. The population is predominantly Muslim, with Christian and other religious communities. Senegal has been a member of the African Union since 1963, and Independence Day is celebrated on 4 April.

The President of the Republic is Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
